Many years ago, I was a simple SMW hacking n00b (we all start somewhere), working on a simple hack called "Yet Another Super Mario World ROM Hack" (which was never really shown or made public, yet JJ claims the title was similar to Just Another Mario Hack). The main focus was some new graphics and levels, and eventually ExGFX (the same ExGFX sets were made into the backbone of the old ExGFX Workshop). However, I silently scrapped the game, for reasons of lack of time, growing disgust of the SMW hacking community and its festering n00bs, a general hate about using Linux to make ROM hacks (which was part of the previous), and that I was just too damn lazy.
December of 2005, I got a laptop with Winsuck on it. I left it there and decided to try SMW hacking again. So YASMWRH was reborn in a very unlikely fashion. I decided to insert retro-styled Goombas into SMW. Problem is, I wanted to give them separate GFX, and that was a pain. I had no choice: I had to re-map sprites. This led to finding unused animation values that would allow many enemies to turn like Koopa Troopas do. This little effect was shown off on a few boards, and people clamored for more. Soon, restoration of lost levels began. Then new levels were being forged. Then a storyline, a list of worlds, some ASM hacks to give Luigi his own physics and tileset, fixes for unused enemies... in the end, after 3 months of hard work, a new hack rised from YASMWRH: Super Mario's Island Hopping Adventure.
-= 1.1 The story =-
Much like many Mario games, this one has the same basic story. Mario and Luigi have gone onto vacation to an area south of the Mushroom Kingdom, called the Eight Isles. On a relatively quiet and peaceful island, called the Isle of Generic Grasslands, Mario and Luigi kicked back in their own private place, drinking Mushroom Pina Colatas and snacking on manicotti.
About three days after getting settled in, a letter had come from the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario and Luigi read...
"To the Mario Brothers:
We are in a dire predicament! The fair Princess peach has been taken by Bowser during your absense! He said he was taking her to his new base on the moon, and that he has created a rip in the space-time continuum which will be turned into a weapon of mass destruction if something isn't done! Please save Princess Peach and the Mushroom Kingdom, nay, the very world!
Sincerely,
Toadsworth"
The brothers, after staring long and hard at the letter, gave out a large sigh, and said, "Here we go!... again..."
They began their trek to save Peach and everything else.
-= 2.1 How to install patch =-
You have two options for applying the patch to play the game. Option one is for the non-geeks, and that is to have a clean SMW ROM with the same name as the IPS patch (with the .smc extension) in the same folder as the patch. The other option is more common in the emulation world, and that is to apply the patch to a clean SMW ROM (with a 512 byte copier header) using a utility like LunarIPS or the older favorite SNESTool. Either way is perfectly acceptible.
-= 2.2 How to play =-
The controls are the same as the regular Super Mario World. However, you should set up your emulator to have Player 2's controls mapped to Player 1's controls, for an easier way to play in Mario and Luigi mode.
-= 2.3 Notes about Luigi =-
Luigi, Mario's brother, is much different in SMIHA than SMW:
-He finally has his own GFX, much like with the Super Mario AllStars + World version, and Super Mario Advance 2.
-He has different physics. Namely, he has slippery controls but a better jump.
-He can fly far higher than Mario with the cape, but he cannot glide. He can slide across the ground longer, to hit more enemies along the path.
-Be sure to play through the game in Mario and Luigi mode; many Ace coins and secrets will be limited to Luigi's special physics.
-= 2.4 Other notes =-
-Yoshis do not start out as adults; you must feed them after hatching.
-In some areas, you will find blocks that can only be passed if a switch is on or off.
-There are blocks that can be smashed from below as Super Mario/Luigi. There are also blocks that break when you touch them, bouncing you a little into the air, or disintergrate at the slightest touch.
-= 3.1 Redistribution =-
If you wish to redistribute this hack in any way, shape or form, please ask me first. I'll most likely say yes! You may contact me by email at knuxt15 AT netscape DOT net
Please note that this also pertains to ROM sites, such as EdgeEmu and CherryROMs. Please guys, just ask first!
-= 4.1 FAQs =-
Q: I have a question about SMW hacking...
A: Go here: <http://smwcentral.pure-text.com/>
Q: Where can I get a clean SMW ROM?
A: Do not ask me this question, as I'll put your name on various SPAM lists for the hell of it. Seriously. Even if it is a joke.
Q: May I (please) use something from your hack?
A: If you had a "please" in your request, contact me by email with the specifics (see 3.1), as well as your handle (online name, like Juggling Joker or Trasher), and what ROM hacking site you are from, if any.
Asking things from me in this manner is a two-way street; be prepared to do some of my bidding (which will probably be something small and equivalent to what you are asking for).
If you did not say please, then no fucking way you greedy little bastard.
Q: How did you re-map the sprites?
A: Hex editor, Lunar Magic's 8x8 tile viewer, and patience. If youwant addresses, go to SMW Central <http://smwcentral.pure-text.com/> and look in the offset list; I submitted the ones I used.
Q: When will the final version be out?
A: When it's out. Seriously.
Though I am trying to push myself for sometime at the end of 2006...
Q: (MFGG only) Okay, what was the whole "7 DAYS" thing about?
A: Two things. One, I was really counting down to the release of Fedora Core 5. However, it got pushed back 5 days (to March 20th), because of things beyond the developer's control, but they are making up for it to the users by putting in a really fresh version of GNOME 2.14. Whee! Two, I wanted to make a sarcastic post on MFGG on the launch with a link to the demo, just to see people's heads spin. Aw well. I'll make it up to you by releasing early.
Q: I have a question not listed here...
A: THEN you email me (see 3.1)! Unless you're Remoga, N65, Chompa, or that idiot who MSN'd me, not knowing what "uncompress" meant. I want you to stay the fuck away from me.
