Super Luigi: The Regular Quest

Standard: Easy

Changelog & Known Bugs.txt
---------------
Changes in Demo 1.2:
- Several changes to the level design of World 1. In particular, I removed some of the
excessive power-ups and replaced the carryable POWs with stationary ones (since there was no
reason to carry them and people were getting confused thinking they were supposed to bring them
someplace), made the secret exit of Level 3 a bit more hidden, fixed the scrolling background
glitch in the Phanto area, made wall jumps actually necessary from their introduction, changed the
Yellow Shy Guy's graphics to carry a spear so that getting hurt by them makes more sense, and various
other miscellaneous changes.
- Changed the story to something less... stupid.
- Minor graphical change to Luigi. Instead of making the peace sign after the goal, he now crosses
his arms. Player 2 (Mario) retains the peace sign. Sorta shows the personality difference between
the two brothers, ya'know?
- On that note, big Mario's peace sign sprite is changed to look more better. Yes, I said "more better"
on purpose.
---------------
---------------
Changes in Demo 1.1:
- Fixed a bug where the player could get stuck in a wall and die in part of Level 3.
- The rare bug where the music during the Level 5 boss battle doesn't play should be fixed (IN THEORY).
However, if you still encounter the bug (or any bug at all, for that matter), please let me know by
sending me (Blittle McNilsen) a message on SMW Central: http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=profile&id=3127
- Made the boss in Level 3 less insane.
- Removed a couple powerups in the last room of Level 3, as they were a bit excessive.
- Fixed a very minor graphics oddity at the beginning of Level 5; most people won't even
notice the difference
---------------
---------------
Changes in Demo 1.0:
- First official release.
---------------
Known (major) bugs:
- There are some slowdown issues when using ZSNES 1.51. This is much less obvious in
Snes9x 1.53 and Higan (bsnes) 0.94, so using one of those to play this hack would probably be ideal.
- A remote possibility exists of music not playing in certain areas where it's supposed to. It was
reported by a player to have happened in the end boss of level 1, but never anywhere else. I fixed
it there (I believe), but if a level is silent that doesn't seem like it should be, try re-entering
it. If it now magically has music, then it's probably this glitch. Likewise, if a level that previously
had music is suddenly silent when you re-enter it, it's also probably the same glitch.
If either thing happens to you, message me on SMW Central and let me know.

That way I know to try to snuff this piece of crap out once and for all.
Known (minor) bugs:
- In Level 4, the debris from the scrolling breakable bricks appears higher than the actual brick.
- Not exactly a bug, or even really a problem, but you may notice that levels that use different
music have different Death, Game Over and P-Switch tunes. E.g., a level using SMB1 music has
SMB1 Death and Game Over music, a level using SMB2 music has the SMB2 Death/Game Over, etc.
This has to do with how the game swaps music banks between levels, because the hack doesn't use
Addmusic but rather a combo of UberASM and a heavily modified SMB3 Music Patch.
In theory, it could be "fixed", but the solution is more complicated than it's worth and it's
not even really a problem, just something you might notice and think, "huh, that's never happened
in a hack before". And hey, it makes for some variety, y'know, and if you're a good player
you'll hardly die enough to notice it. :P
- If you are playing the game on a Saturday afternoon at exactly 3:01 PM Pacific Time and
all of the planets are aligned and the month is August and the year is an even number and
there are exactly 7,345,567,676 chickens existing in the United States at that very moment, the
game will crash.
Credits.txt
These are the people who contributed to Super Luigi: The
Regular Quest in one way or another, whether it be providing
resources such as graphics and patches or by helping me work
out technical issues. There are no doubt people that I forgot
to list, as I didn't keep track of everyone who's resources I
used as well as I should have (and I apologize for that). If
you think you contributed something but I forgot to list you,
let me know by sending me a PM at SMW Central. You can do so
here: http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=pm&do=compose&user=3127

I couldn't possibly list every single person who's helped
me with technical issues, as they are quite numerous and
I didn't keep track of them because I'm stupid, which I'm
sorry for. However, some prominent names that come to mind
are...
* Alcaro
* Ladida
* p4plus2
* ...mainly because they helped with the big problems
involving ASM and stuff. However, I think that many of the
other people listed here also helped with technical stuff,
especially those under "CODING & TOOLS".

==Intro==
Hello, and thank you for downloading my ROM hack.
In this folder, you'll find 4 files:
-Super Luigi - The Regular Quest DEMO 1.2.bps
-Changelog & Known Bugs.txt
-Credits.txt
-Readme.txt
-Lore (folder)
"Super Luigi - The Regular Quest DEMO 1.2.bps" is the game itself. Use the program Floating IPS
to patch the file to an unmodified, headered (.SMC), North American (U) Super Mario World ROM file.
"Changelog & Known Bugs.txt" lists changes between versions of the hack, as well as notable glitches.
"Credits.txt" lists the people who helped make this hack.
"Readme.txt" is the file you're reading right now.
"Lore (folder)" is a folder containing more information on the backstory and setting, like instruction books
(remember those?) used to do before game developers were able to jam-pack 100 terabytes worth of dialog into
games. Good for if you need clarification on something (such as why some Koopas are wearing Shy Guy masks,
or who the "Neo 8-Bits" are). As you can tell, there's a bit more going on than first meets the eye...
==How to Use==
1. Patch "Super Luigi - The Regular Quest DEMO 1.2.bps" to an unmodified Super Mario World ROM. For an
explanation on how to do this, read: http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=faq&page=1219815-ips-and-bps-files
2. After you've patched the ROM, open the ROM in a SNES emulator, such as ZSNES, Snes9x or Higan
(aka Bsnes), to play it. SMW Central also provides these, just look under the "Tools" section
(http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&s=tools). For information on what emulator works best,
check the section titled "Compatibility" in this file... Yes, this one that you're reading right now.
3. That's pretty much it... Assuming there's no weird technical problems, you should be ready to go!
Have fun!
==Compatibility==
This hack has been tested and confirmed to work on the following emulators:
-Snes9x 1.53
-Higan (Accuracy Build) 0.94
-ZSNES 1.51 (sort of... see below)
Other emulators have not been tested, but *should* work. Also, since it works on Higan Accuracy
(aka, the closest possible software to a real SNES), it *should* also work on a real SNES, if you have a
flash cart.
A NOTE ABOUT ZSNES 1.51: This emulator seems to have more problems with slowdown than other emulators that
have been tested. Slowdown is still present at times in the other emulators, but not as much. Therefore,
Snes9x or Higan will work best for this hack. You CAN still use ZSNES if you must (there's no awful
game-breaking glitches or anything), just keep this in mind. Though considering the security problems of
ZSNES that have recently come to light and the fact SMW Central no longer requires hacks to work on ZSNES due
to said issues, you may be better off just not using ZSNES at all.
==How to Play==
The player physics and controls in this hack are much the same as in Super Mario World, but with an added
Wall Jump feature. To use this, jump into a wall and keep pressing into the direction of that wall with the
Control Pad. You'll notice your player begin to slide down against the wall. While he's doing this, press the
B button, and he'll kick off the wall just like in Super Mario 64!
In addition to standard Mario enemies, like Koopas, Goombas, Boos, etc., there is also the addition of
Super Mario Bros. 2-styled enemies, like Shy Guys and Snifits, which function like in the aforementioned
game; stand on top of them and press Y or X to pick them up. Be careful of any yellow spear-carrying Shy Guys,
however - they cannot be jumped on, and you'll take damage if you try to.
If you've ever played a Mario game before (which you probably have if you're playing ROM hacks of them),
especially Super Mario World, you should catch on pretty quickly.
==Found a Bug?==

Anyways, thanks for downloading, and I hope you enjoy Super Luigi: The Regular Quest!
