New Super Mario Bros.





A continuation of Juga’s New Super Mario Bros. remake, with working levels and ExGFX. I’m not really planning on finishing this, so anyone who wants to can continue working on it or just use the graphics in their own hack.

In December 2006, Juga released a demo of his NSMB remake. It consisted of a poorly constructed World 1-1. For my own amusement, I improved upon his level by adding ExGfx, working pipes, breakable bricks, stompable Goombas, custom blocks, etc etc. After making a servicable 1-1, I decided to finish out the entire first world. I don't actually own a DS, so I had to make the levels by watching speedruns on Youtube frame by frame. Any areas I couldn't see in a video won't be included in the game.
I didn't actually finish the first world out, and for the time being, I'm done with this. If anyone wants to take up this project where I left off, feel free. Or if you just want to rip the ExGfx for your own hack, that's fine, too. There's an original Mario sprite here that somebody could probably get some use out of at the very least.
I've included the .asm and .cfg files for the custom sprites I've used, along with a sprite list. There's also a .dsc file so you can see which custom blocks I've used. All blocks are included in blocktool.
What still needs work:
World 1-1: The background is a little glitched in places. This is due to me not assembling the map16 properly. There's no Mega Mushroom. Enjoy a star instead.
World 1-2: The graphics aren't really completed here. There are some tiles in the ExGfx files that I never got around to assembling map16 for, and other foreground graphics are missing. There's a full background set, but it's not really assembled.
World 1-3: I never got around to doing a new background for this, so it just shares 1-1's background. Maybe someone could figure out a better solution for the bucking mushroom platforms than what I've done.
World 1 Tower: Since I couldn't have vertical layer 2 scrolling, this isn't a whole lot like the DS level. Not all the graphics are complete. (doors, all of Baby Bowser's room...)
World 1-4: Pretty much done except for previously mentioned background issues. The Mini Mushroom's just got a Poison Mushroom to shrink Mario.
World 1-A: No background and I never bothered to rip proper foreground graphics. A lot of the level design itself is probably wrong as I couldn't find a good video of this level.
World 1-5: The pulley lifts have no graphics and don't work. There's a pipe that should be enterable in the middle of the level, but I never saw a video that entered it, so I don't know what's in it. I never fixed the palette for the ground at the end.
World 1 Castle: I never fixed the graphical glitches on the ropes. Layer 2 scrolling isn't really much like the DS level. Bowser's room is just sketchily laid in.
