Mushroom Kingdom - Under Crimson Skies

Released:
Found on: smwc
Difficulty: 7.5

After many failed projects, rushed releases, cancelled demos… Blind Devil presents Mushroom Kingdom - Under Crimson Skies: a hack meant to be fun, consistent, interesting and original.

Mushroom Kingdom has been covered up by crimson magic, cast at the clouds. That magic made all of the kingdom’s inhabitants turn into stone statues, except for Mario and Princess Peach. It’s now up to Mario to find out the responsible for that, and to restore Mushroom Kingdom to its former state.

The adventure consists of exploring the land to find Power Stars, and with their powers, dispel the crimson magic, restore Nature’s Equilibrium and save the Universe’s Destiny, which’s also menaced by the one troublemaker. However, that’s not as simple as it seems.

As you progress through the game, more of the story is revealed, and complex event turnarounds happen as well.

This hack doesn’t have a relevant number of exits - the 21 exits are a symbolic representation of how many Power Stars are required to beat the game. There are more than 21 levels as well as some extra Power Stars, not to mention primary quests and extra optional, postgame quests. It may look like a short hack at first glance, but don’t get it wrong - it’s reasonably long, and provides up to 4 hours or more of gameplay.

Regarding features: the hack has a full original soundtrack, selfmade graphics, exclusive ASM, a hopefully good level design - from regular platformer to explorative levels - , explorative overworld…

…and the rest, you should find out when you play!

Mushroom Kingdom - Under Crimson Skies
by Blind Devil

----------

First of all, thank you for downloading my hack! MKUCS is the result of about 2 years
of hard work. It features a completely custom soundtrack, handdrawn graphics,
exclusive ASM resources, quality levels and overworld, and an engaging storyline...
which I sum up as "a fun, consistent, interesting and original" hack.

~ Plot/Storyline ~

Mushroom Kingdom has been covered up by crimson magic, cast at the clouds. That magic
made all of the kingdom's inhabitants turn into stone statues, except for Mario and
Princess Peach. It's now up to Mario to find out the responsible for that, and to
restore Mushroom Kingdom to its former state.

The adventure consists of exploring the land to find Power Stars, and with their
powers, dispel the crimson magic, restore Nature's Equilibrium and save the
Universe's Destiny, which's also menaced by the one troublemaker. However, that's not
as simple as it seems.

As you progress through the game, more of the story is revealed, and complex event
turnarounds happen as well.

----------

~ About the hack length and difficulty ~

MKUCS is a fairly hard hack and a bit long, although not too much, assuming that you
should be familiarized with the original Super Mario World. It does not have a
relevant number of exits - that is because gameplay revolves around various different
quests, in which some levels even need to be revisited in order to progress. Plus, it
includes extra postgame content that you can find out after beating the regular game.

~ What's a BPS? How do I play the game? ~

A BPS file is a patch meant to be inserted in a copy of the original Super Mario World
ROM (usually an SMC or SFC file).

To patch it, you need a tool called 'Floating IPS' a.k.a. 'Flips Patch Utility'. Open
the program, then select 'Apply Patch'. In the resulting dialog window, select the
BPS file. In the next one, select your unmodified Super Mario World ROM (you don't
need to make a copy yourself, as the tool automatically will do so). Lastly, the final
dialog will prompt for the name of the output file. The default name should suffice.
After this is done, you're finally able to open the output file in your emulator/flash
SNES cartridge and play it.

----------

~ Known issues ~

> Sometimes when you collect an item in a dungeon, or pick up a Giant Throw Block,
VRAM won't get updated, meaning that parts of tiles will still be shown on screen,
even though the blocks have already vanished. This doesn't affect gameplay.

> Noticeable slowdown in a few levels, especially in the final airship, at the middle
section.

> There's a chance that, when pausing the game while other SFX plays simultaneously,
music volume won't fade, and when unpausing, volume won't be restored to normal.
Pausing and unpausing again may solve this issue.

> The Magical Rope block in Muncher Maze level will not spawn if there are too many
sprites on screen. However, that's due to SMW's limitations, not a real bug, as after
you kill some sprites, you can spawn the climbing rope. I thought it's worth mentioning
anyways.

> The shield ring meter won't refill if sprites are killed with a throw block.

> In extremely rare circumstances, palettes may get glitched after a VWF message
finishes being displayed.

----------

~ Anything else? ~

This hack doesn't make use of any enhancement chips (SA-1/Super FX), which means that
it's fully compatible with any emulator, and also with the SNES. However, if you do
find any bug or glitch that isn't mentioned, or related to the previously mentioned
issues, please contact me either via PM on SMW Central, or DM via Discord. My user ID
on SMWC is 9964, and my Discord tag is BlindDevil#9323.

Also, the game is automatically saved every time you move in the overworld, and also
during/after crucial events, for example when completing certain quests.

Lastly, avoid ripping content from this hack without asking permission.

~ Changelog ~

> 2017-07-10: fixed ASM opcode mistake in Power Realm introduction message, which
caused the game to crash. Plus, an update to keys/locks system was made, so they will
always be saved during gameplay, unless you get a game over. On another note, don't
worry about your old version saved game (SRAM file) - it's still compatible with the
current one. =)

> 2017-07-07: first release.

That should be all. Once again, thanks for downloading!

Hope you have fun!
