Back to the Classics

This is my first complete hack, a pure vanilla hack I have been working on for over a year and a half(on and off), since around March/April of 2009. It does not use any custom graphics (or anything else custom, for that matter), not even to “combine” Super Mario World’s graphics into one file.
This hack has many areas to explore, from sinking ships to sky-high forests, topped with neat custom palettes. There are two versions of the hack, a vanilla music version (called “bttc.ips”), for those who enjoy Super Mario World’s soundtrack, and want to have a pure vanilla adventure, and a custom music version (called “bttccusmus.ips”), for those who are tired of Super Mario World’s music (although my music choices aren’t amazing, as Zildjian has pointed out to me).
All in all, I just hope that this hack can send you, if only for a moment, back to the classics.
NOTE: It is highly recommended that you use either ZSNES v1.51, snes9x v1.51, or bsnes(although bsnes makes the palettes look a little weird) to play this, as music issues have been reported on snes9x v1.52(at least for Macs). (this is version 1.1 of this hack, which fixes a few minor issues it had before)

1. What is this?
This is a ROM hack (or modified version) by Spud Alpha(or spudxd6, whichever you prefer to call me) of Super Mario World. It is vanilla, which is a term used quite broadly, and its definition varies from person to person. To me, it means using nothing but Lunar Magic, a Super Mario World hacking program, to build a hack. That means no extra graphics, no graphics combining via YY-CHR, no custom blocks, sprites, or anything like that. Pure Lunar Magic. Some people may think, "Hey, that sounds boorrinng." Well, that's the challenge: creating a decent game out of Super Mario World's limited resources with a rather bare-bones, you might say, tool called Lunar Magic. Which is what I hope to have achieved. Some of the highpoints are: vanilla graphical creations, good palettes, fun gimmicks, and good level design. All in all, it's just another vanilla Super Mario World hack.

2. What's the story behind this?
This section is for the story BEHIND the hack, not the hack's story, by the way, but just to get it out of the way: the hack's story is that "Mario and Peach were flying in Peach's airship when suddenly it was invaded. Peach was captured, and Mario was thrown out of the ship. Mario awakes on beautiful Vanilla Island. Find Peach!" Yeah, not the best, but storylines are not my forte.
AANNNNNYYWAYS, the story behind the hack is this: I, long ago(spring of 2009), after I had been a hacker for between 3 and 4.5ish months(my memory is bad <_<), wanted to make a vanilla level for fun. I decided to make a second vanilla level for fun. I came up with a graphical gimmick present in level 1 of this hack, in fact, that IS the very level I'm talking about, the one that set this hack in motion. The gimmick has to do with using graphics previously used for something completely different in a new way, for a new thing. Such as using bush graphics as clouds(which I didn't do, it's an example). All it takes is "Map16 trickery" aka messing around with the graphics and tiles, and "Palette trickery" aka messing around with the palettes(for instance, the bush palette should be white instead of green if I were to make a cloud from a bush.) I claim to have invented these techniques, all to make new "graphics" from old graphics. However, I might be wrong. Pretty sure I'm right, though XD And it's a pretty common practice by good vanilla hackers by now.
Anyways, I thought, "hey, this is fun, using old graphics in new ways." So, that right there became the hack's gimmick. Each level(or most) would use old graphics in new ways. I seem to have kept to that vision right down to the final level. I'm glad I did it, and that well over a year later, the hack is finished.

3. How do I play it?
You need 4 things to play this hack:
1. The IPS Patch - The file you downloaded comes with 2 IPS patches, so you're set with these. The 2 IPS patches are the 2 versions of this hack: 1 with custom music and 1 without(which I made because I like the SMW soundtrack, but custom music is another good option). Decide which you'd like to use. Now, these files are IPS files, the non-custom music version is titled "bttc.ips". The custom music version is titled "bttccusmus.ips".
2. A Super Mario World ROM - Super Mario World, basically, but playable on the computer. I cannot provide you with one, search Google for one. Soon you will have to patch the IPS patch to this ROM file with the next tool, the:
3. Lunar IPS - A certain tool that lets you patch an IPS patch to a ROM.
4. An SNES emulator - a device that mimmicks the SNES. ZSNES or SNES9X are popular emulators, although I currently have not tested this hack on all emulators, it should work on most due to being "simple".
Now, these are the steps to play: open Lunar IPS. Click the button "Apply IPS Patch". It will open up a popup window. Find the IPS file you want to use, either "bttc.ips" or "bttccusmus.ips". Double click the selected IPS file. It should close the current popup window and bring up another. Now, in the new popup window, select the Super Mario World ROM. Double click it. Lunar IPS should say, "file succesfully patched!" or something along those lines. Now, open up your SNES emulator. In this SNES emulator, open up the patched SMW ROM. It should open up Back to the Classics.

That's it, go play my hack! If you need any help with anything related to my hack or hacking in general feel free to PM me at YouTube(I go by spudxd6 there), or, preferably, at smwcentral.net(I go by Spud Alpha there), I'll be happy to help, but I'm busy and can't guarantee I will respond. If you made it through all that text without falling asleep or flat out skipping it, I congradulate you and award you an imaginary cookie, which is, honestly, pretty much worthless, but once the internet takes over the world and sucks everyone into cyberspace in 2012 you'll at least something to eEat.
Thanks for reading/playing/eEating,
