A Strange Mission

Update (12/24/09): A few minor bugs fixed and another known bug added to the Readme.
“A Strange Mission” is a hack that I’ve been working on for almost a year. It’s rather short (8 exits), and it doesn’t contain many fancy custom GFX, let alone custom music, but there’s one thing that makes it special: Every level has a unique gimmick programmed with ASM. Kind of like “Brutal Mario”, just not as advanced. For example, there will be the feature to play as Yoshi, doors that teleport you by scrolling the screen, and many more.

1. What is this?
"A Strange Mission" is a hack of Super Mario World that I've been working on
for almost a year. It's rather short (8 exits), and it doesn't contain many
fancy custom GFX, let alone custom music, but there's one thing that makes
it special: Every level has a unique gimmick programmed with ASM. Kind of like
"Brutal Mario", just not as advanced. For example, there will be the feature
to play as Yoshi, doors that teleport you by scrolling the screen, and many more.
To be honest, I'm not completely satisfied with the final product. If I hadn't
promised to release it on Christmas, it could have been better and more fun to
play... Maybe that's just because I played it too often and grew bored of it,
though. In any case, I'm glad this hack is finally finished.
2. I can't find all the secrets!
Look at the end of this file for a secret exit guide.
3. Known Bugs (aka DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS STUFF!)
- Some levels make no sense when played again. For example, after the first level,
Mario should be freed by Yoshi, but when you play that level again, he's trapped
again. Other examples are "Colorful Coin Palace" and "Bowser's Castle". There's
nothing I could do about that though, since it's not exactly a "bug" I can "fix".
- Visually strange things happen before entering and after beating a level with
HDMA backgrounds (not everything fades out, color gradient appears before level
load etc.) I don't think I'm capable of fixing that either.
- In levels with screen-scrolling doors, you can collect coins while travelling
between two doors. They will also sparkle, but only after you've come out of
a door, thus in the wrong place.
- The ground detection of the bombs in "Explosive Pond" is not 100% accurate.
In other words, they sometimes touch the ground without exploding. That's only
an advantage for you, though. ;)
- When you play as Yoshi and spit out a shell while standing against a wall, it
goes right into the ground. Should also have been a problem in the original
SMW though, and I don't feel like fixing that.
4. Credits
I'd rather you read the credits at the end of the hack, as they're more
visually appealing. It won't take that long to beat it, I promise. ;)
5. Stuff
"A Strange Mission" is a hack of Super Mario World, made by Nintendo. The hack
is in no way supported by Nintendo, which WhiteYoshiEgg is in no way affiliated with.
WhiteYoshiEgg can't be held responsible for any damage that this hack may cause.
...That should work. I hope.

E-Mail: [email protected] (rarely checked)
Praise messages will not be answered though, and neither will questions about secret exits.
(Hint: Look at the end of this file)
That being said, enjoy the hack! :D
...
...
...Yep, here it is.
7. Secret exits
The only levels that have secret exits are "Forest of Doors" and "Colorful Coin Palace".
Here's how to get the secret exit for the latter:
After having beaten Toad and returning to the first room, go right instead of entering
the pipe. You'll notice the coins are gone, but the springboard and the key are still there.
Use them to reach the Keyhole in the upper right corner of the level.
After that, the other secret exit shouldn't be too hard to find anymore. :P
