A Haunting at Chateau Cousseaux is a kuso hack that emerged as an expansion of my level entry in the 2023 Kuso LDC, hosted by Zapplex. I submitted my level then just didn’t stop working on it, and it kept evolving and growing until I had a hack. I learned a ton from Zapplex and my fellow contest participants, and spent a lot of time experimenting with stuff on the glitch list. At the time of making this I had never played a kuso hack, but I think that helped me express my own vision of the kuso hack I wanted to play. Naturally, because I made it, there is some precision too.

This hack is RTA intended, but you could be grinding a lot just to succeed at some tricks depending on your experience level with them. The execution difficulty could be described as excessive at times. Also, while it is hypothetically possible this hack can be cleared blind (assuming you have a lot of SMW glitch knowledge and do not value your own time), I recommend just referencing the clear video whenever you feel stuck. Please use savestates if you need to in order to enjoy the experience. This combination of very demanding execution and sometimes cryptic puzzles isn’t for everyone, and you don’t need to force an RTA clear if you just want to check it out.

1.1 Update: Fixed an issue for console players where yoshification glitch would not work as intended because of uninitialized ram. Your save file should work fine if you rename it to match this version.

1.2 Update: Fixed various cheese, removed a softlock, and also added an entire new hidden area. Can you find the secret Orange Rooms?

1.3 Update: Fixed some cheese. Added a new area of the overworld called the Annex with 3 additional exits including the old secret Orange Rooms, and the secret exit to access that area bringing the total exit count from 5 to 9. I had decided not to release this version awhile ago, but changed my mind after seeing some friends enjoy playing the new levels.
