This hack provides a completely new casual experience based on the original levels, using only Toadstool. Every textbox, every star, and every level in the entire game was changed, making a completely new story, gameplay experience, and level progression.

In this hack, Mario’s been missing for 20 years only to suddenly arrive at Peach’s Castle. Where has he been all this time? What has Bowser done to the kingdom in Mario’s absence?

Intended Any% is 75 (+1) stars.

Hey there!
First of all, thanks for downloading Remastered Quest.
Secondly: Disclaimer - I don't own Mario, don't sue me.

With that out of the way, let me briefly tell you about this hack.
Remastered Quest was designed to be a toadstool hack like none other.
It wasn't meant to be full of memes, increased difficulty, or just stupidity in general.
The goal was to make a hack that used the vanilla base levels but change them in a way to make the experience completely different.
Every single star is changed in Remastered Quest, aside from Toads and Mips. There are 121 stars
Almost every textbox in the game is changed too. All dialogues, signs, star names, main 15 course names, they are all different.
The only text unchanged is essentially system text, ie "You collected a star!" or "You activated the vanish cap!". These are unchanged because, really, what could I even change them too?
The changed text shares a new story. It may feel shoehorned in at times, and you are perfectly able to ignore it, but for those who do care, feel free to read everything and slowly piece together the plot.
Shoutouts to my friend Hoppiper26 for being a big help with beta testing.

With that out of the way, have some TIPS:
Toads that give you stars have extra dialogue if you talk to them a second time.
If you lose your hat and can't get it back, don't worry. Just restart, and go to the cannon. There will be a Mr. Blizzard wearing your hat nearby, kill it to get the hat back.
This game does have something of a difficulty curve. There may be difficulty spikes every so often, but it should follow some sort of curve, getting harder at the end.
This hack was designed to be easily doable savestateless if you are pretty decent at the game. This doesn't mean deathless, but it does mean it's not kaizo difficulty.
The order of the courses is different from vanilla SM64. If you want to precise intended order of the levels, look at the castle pause menu or the main menu "score" feature.
Even if you don't like the story or plot, don't completely ignore textboxes. Some of them have hints towards some slightly more hidden things in the game.
Despite me thoroughly playtesting and proofreading, it's still possible that something may be dumb, bad, a typo, or poorly aligned. If so, I'm sorry, it's hard to catch everything.

This hack does NOT have the vanilla distribution of secret stars. There are 16 secret stars and the amount in each level isn't neccisarily vanilla.
In any secret course, there will however only be either 1 or 2 stars, never more or less. There are hints in game text that should help narrow it down.
If you want the exact breakdown now, it's at the bottom of this Readme.

(PS: If you do play this and make videos about it, please at least mention me as the hack creator! A lot of work went into this, and I'd hate to be ignored for it!)
